GAIA Keepership Retreat - Check-In and Check-Out
Check In: After 4pm Saturday November 10th 2007 with dinner tonight being the first meal.
Check Out: By 11am Saturday November 24th 2007 with lunch today being the last meal.
Check in starts at 4:00 PM – Check out is 11:00 AM. All rooms must be vacated and keys returned by check out time. Late checkouts require a minimum 24-hour notice. Keepership Retreat participants are asked to be accommodated on the Saturday night before the retreat as the work starts promptly after breakfast next morning of the Sunday.
Early Arrivals and Those Staying On After
Kalani is glad to extend the benefit of group rates beyond the dates of your program (space permitting) to participants. You are required to inform me of any additional dates you wish to be accommodated to qualify for these group rates and I will inform the venue of your booking. Otherwise normal overnight rates will apply and individual reservations must be made through our Front Desk at 800-800-6886 (USA number).
Accommodations
Kalani offers a range of accommodation to suit every budget. The accommodations are simple and comfortable, with no televisions or phones.
Treehouse Rooms - The Tree Houses are separate spacious units, on two levels, nestled under the cool shade of a large Monkeypod Tree, enhanced by views of pasture and glimpses of sea through a coastal grove of native Kamani (mahogany) and coconut palms.
King bed, private bath, fan, mini fridge, ocean and horse pasture vistas. Approximately 500 square-feet.
Cottages - The Guest Cottages are nestled amongst the trees, offering a private and charming place to get away and relax.
Double bed and queen futon, private bath, fan, mini fridge, jungle vista. Approximately 250 square-feet.)
Hales/Lodges - The three split level lodges or Hales (pronounced Ha'-lay, Hawaiian for "house" or "lodge") house several rooms on each floor with access to a shared kitchen for more informal, communal living.
Twin, double, or king beds, shared or private bath, fan, garden vista. Room is approximately 200 square-feet. Includes access to adjoining studio with shared kitchen and an upstairs meeting area. The recently-renovated Lodge 1 has no shared kitchen but features garden lanais (verandas), hammocks, and native ohia floors.
Campsite - For travellers on a budget, we offer outdoor camping. The campsites are simple but are situated near the outdoor bathroom and showers for convenience.
Platforms for tents, optional canopy cover, and access to outdoor bathroom and hot showers.
What to bring
Sneakers/hiking shoes, a long sleeve shirt and pants (for evenings), loose cool clothing for daily workshops, swimsuit, swim towel, sun block, insect repellent, battery operated alarm clock and flashlight. Also, bring your favourite crystal and something to add to the altars, digital recorders only (please do not bring tape recorders for recording).
Cuisine
Three times a day, guests and staff are summoned by the call of the conch to dine on our open air lanai (veranda). At this central gathering place, you can experience the daily rhythms of assembly and departure reminiscent of ancient village life. Kalani cuisine encompasses a variety of styles including Thai, Indian, and Italian. Our chefs have extensive training and a common interest in creating healthful and delicious meals. We celebrate the abundance of Hawaii by serving local tropical fruits and vegetables and fresh caught fish. Seafood is often served at dinner (chicken is served occasionally), and vegetarians and vegans are well cared for. Most importantly, our chefs firmly believe that the care and love invested in the cuisine is transmitted to the diner, and everything is prepared with aloha.
Meals are served buffet-style on our outdoor dining lanai at the following times:
- breakfast from 7:30 am to 8:30 am
- lunch from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
- dinner from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm
A sample menu includes:
Breakfast
Scrambled eggs, banana macadamia nut pancakes, curried tofu scramble, oatmeal, tropical fruit, cold cereal, yoghurt, nuts and seeds, a selection of breads and spreads.
Lunch
Tomato soup, tempeh reuben, tuna salad, organic salad bar, fruit salad.
Dinner
Coconut squash soup, seared ahi (fish) with pineapple salsa, baked tempeh, quinoa with sunflower seeds, broccoli stir fry, cucumber salad, lemon ginger cake.
Juice, coffee, and tea are available during meals (with milk, soy milk, and rice milk).
Drug and Alcohol Policy
Kalani does its best to maintain a healthy environment for its staff and guests. No drugs or hard liquors are allowed on Kalani grounds.
They reserve the right to expel anyone engaged in using drugs or any other illegal substance related activities. GAIA supports this policy.
Facilities
Pools
Our low-chlorine, 25 meter Olympic pool is perfect for relaxation or exercise. Little ones enjoy our children's splash pool. The adjacent heated warm pool is available for aquatic bodywork or a Biodanza class.
Jacuzzis and Sauna
Our two jacuzzis and sauna are the perfect place to let your cares drift away. (Pool area is topless all day, clothing optional after 5 pm, adults only after 7 pm. Please take note that other groups use this retreat at the same time so you can prevent being offended).
Massage Rooms
The massage rooms provide a peaceful sanctuary where you can open yourself to the care of our skilled bodyworkers.
Dining Lanai
The casual open-air dining lanai (veranda) offers a view of our grounds while you enjoy our delicious cuisine.
Aloha Cafe
The cafe is open from 7 pm to 10:30 pm (Monday - Saturday). You can enjoy snacks, ice cream (dairy and non-diary), coffee and a variety of teas.
Gift Shop
Our gift shop is stocked with a selection of Hawaiian crafts, clothing, snacks and personal hygiene items.
Tennis and Volleyball
A tennis court is available for your enjoyment. Outdoor volleyball is a fun way to meet other guests and Kalani staff.
Getting There
Kalani Oceanside Retreat Centre is on the big island of Hawaii on the eastern part of the island below the airport of Hilo. International flights will arrive in Honolulu International Airport. Honolulu is on the island of Oahu. You will need to island hop to get to the big island of Hawaii. See below. The following information is provided by the retreat centre but it is your responsibility to get to the retreat centre. See a travel agent if necessary. Also check to see if visas are required for your country.
Option 1: Transfer to Hilo (on big island of Hawaii) via airports on other islands.
Fly to Hilo from other airports (Honolulu on Oahu, Kahului on Maui, or Lihue on Kauai). Several flights are offered daily with Aloha Airlines (1-800-367-5250) or Hawaiian Airlines (1-800-367-5320). Kalani is only a 40 minute drive from the Hilo airport.
Option 2: Fly direct to Kona (on big island of Hawaii) from North America and Asia.
Kalani is a 2.5 hour scenic drive from Kona, half way around Hawaii Island, "the Big Island", via either the northern or southern routes. You will have the opportunity to view the other half when you return to Kona. Special car rental rates and inter-island flight coupons are available from both Hawaiian and Aloha airlines, upon request. Rental cars at special rates can be secured when you make your flight reservations.
Kalani airport shuttle
We offer transportation (from Hilo only) for US$50 one way, or US$35 per person if more than one traveller. We try to combine whenever possible. A regular taxi costs about US$70. Let Kalani know at least a day in advance if you require an airport pickup; the cancellation policy is 24 hours notice.
Driving to Kalani from the Kona airport
- Make a left out of the airport and drive north on route 19.
- Continue on route 19 through Waimea and all the way down the Hamakua coast (still route 19) until you get to Hilo.
- Make a right at Ken's House of Pancakes (sign says Volcano 30 miles), you will then be on Highway 11.
- Continue on Hwy 11 until you are out of town (get in left lane) and make a left at sign for Pahoa 11 miles
(this will be Hwy 130).
- Take Hwy 130 8 miles past Pahoa and turn left towards Kalapana (this will be Coastal Highway 137 Kalapana-Kapoho).
- Follow the bend in the road to the right.
- After 1/3 of a mile you will reach a T-junction. Turn left at the T-junction (towards Kapoho).
- After about 5 miles, Kalani will be on your left, between the 17 and 18 mile-marker.
Drivng to Kalani from the Hilo airport
- Make a left at the end of airport road at lights onto Highway 11.
- Continue on Hwy 11 until you are out of town (get in left lane) and make a left at sign for Pahoa 11 miles (this will be Hwy 130).
- Take Hwy 130 8 miles past Pahoa and turn left towards Kalapana (this will be Coastal Highway 137 Kalapana-Kapoho).
- Follow the bend in the road to the right.
- After 1/3 of a mile you will reach a T-junction. Turn left at the T-junction (towards Kapoho).
- After about 5 miles, Kalani will be on your left, between the 17 and 18 mile-marker.
